    Favorite Features

    Kid-Friendly Interface

Tux Paint’s interface is simple and easy to use, perfect for creative young children. The Linux mascot Tux the Penguin is an integral part of the interface, helping children find out more about the program.

Parents and teachers will approve of the backend kid friendly features. For example, you can choose to disable button distinction, allowing your child to push any button on the mouse; or you can enable the grab mouse pointer feature that keeps your child from moving the cursor out of Tux Paint.

    Drawing Tools

Tux Paint includes a variety of customizable drawing tools to help your young artist create. There are paint brush, rubber stamp, line and shape tools. Parents and teachers can easily add to the paint brushes and rubber stamps in the settings.

    Magic Tools

Kids are sure to love the “Magic Tools” that come with Tux Paint. The Magic Tools set has a variety of special effects that kids can apply to the drawings they create in Tux Paint. Some tools allow you to create different objects, like grass, flowers and rainbows. Other magic tools, like the TV, Sharpen and Mosaic tools allow you to add effects to a portion or the entire picture.

    Tips for New Users

When you first install Tux Paint, it will bring up the Tux Paint Config window, allowing you to customize the Tux Paint experience. This is where you can choose to disable printing or define the size of the window at launch.

If you have children of varying ages, you can log in via each profile and customize the program for each of your children. You can also choose to apply the same settings to all accounts that have access to the program.

    Areas for Improvement

Every tool in Tux Paint has an accompanying sound effect that plays during the duration of using the tools. Sound effects can be disabled completely in settings but disabling the sound completely may make the program boring for some children. An alternative is to shorten the sound byte so that it plays at the beginning of the tool only would be appreciated.

Tux Paint is a wonderful program for your budding digital artist. Its easy to use layout and variety of creative tools make it a source of endless computing fun for kids. Meanwhile, features like mouse grabbing, full screen and other background kid friendly settings make it a program that parents and teachers can happily put on a shared computer.
